Smart Board – Interactive Whiteboard (IWB)
The smart boards are replacing the old blackboards, flip chart pares and over head projectors in schools, colleges and universities. But we are still not sure if it is really a good item to buy. We are going to discuss and show some of the advantages and disadvantages of such boards found in the market today.
Advantages:
You can use the board to control the applications of the computer or laptop without having to use the keyboard while physically interacting the screen shown on the display to the students.
There are also four colored markers and an easer provided with the board. These markers have four individual colors and it can be used a pen to write on the boards the help of digital ink.
The things you write with these digital pens can be saved like a notebook file by converting your handwritten words into computer text.
Disadvantages:
The biggest problem is writing on the board. As the board is a front mounted screen, the image tends to get blocked whenever you come between the projectors. This is a great disadvantage as your shadow blocks the view of the projector making the board almost useless.
The next problem is that it is hard to write neatly without leaning on the board. As the board is a touch sensitive screen, the touch of your palm as you try to write creates a disturbance by changing the position of the mouse cursor. So in order to write neatly on the board you must learn how to write with the tip of the pen without touching the screen with your palm. Even after intense practice, it is hard to write as the words still get large, blocky and untidy. It is easy to underline or circle key points with the pen but it is hard to edit and rewrite as the controls are difficult to get.
Even with the touch sensitive board you have to go use the keyboard of your laptop or computer as there are places where you cannot write with the pen. Like, after opening a web browser you have to back to the keyboard to type the URL as the boards writing does not support such applications.
The SMART boards are very expensive. The cost of such boards of length of about 195.6 cm is about $1399 is way beyond the price any school teacher can afford.
You will also need to buy a projector to project the image of the computer or laptop screen and other accessories which are also expensive.
